Notes and variations

Tomatillos. If not available, you can substitute tomatillos with green or unripe tomatoes as they have a similar texture and tart flavor. Avocados. The perfect avocado for making guacamole are Hass avocados because of their flavor and creamy texture. When choosing an avocado, choose a ripe avocado that has a shiny and dark green skin, and slightly firm when you squeeze it. You can also use frozen avocados. Jalapeños. If you desire more spicy kick of heat in your guacamole salsa, swap out the jalapeño peppers for serrano peppers or green chile peppers. If you prefer a less spicy guacamole salsa, remove the jalapeño seeds and membrane before adding to the salsa. You can even omit the jalapeños entirely for a completely mild salsa! Lime juice. Substitute lime juice with apple cider vinegar (half a tablespoon), orange juice, or lemon juice!

📖 How to make guacamole salsa

Step 1: Place tomatillos, garlic cloves, and jalapenos in a medium saucepan or pot, cover with water, and bring to a rolling boil over medium-high heat. Once the water hits a rolling boil, reduce heat and simmer for ~10 minutes until tomatillos soften (but should not break apart). Using a slotted spoon, transfer the tomatillos, jalapenos, and garlic to a blender. Step 2: Roughly chop up 1 medium onion and ½ cup of cilantro and add to the blender along with the flesh of 2 large avocados (pitted). Step 3: Add salt (adjust to taste) and blend until smooth.

👩🏽‍🍳 Tips for the best guacamole salsa

⭐ Use ripe avocados. The key to creamy, flavorful guacamole salsa starts with selecting perfectly ripe avocados. They should feel slightly soft when gently pressed without being mushy.

Let it marinate and chill. This resting period allows the flavors to meld together, creating a more cohesive and robust taste. Just be sure to place it in an airtight container or cover with plastic wrap and press it to the surface. To thicken watery salsa, add more avocado or let the salsa sit in the refrigerator to allow some of the liquid to be absorbed by the solid ingredients.

🍴 What to serve with guacamole salsa

This guacamole salsa is the perfect dip to serve with tortillas chips, tacos, quesadillas, and many other Mexican dishes. To store, place in an airtight container such as a mason jar or store it in a bowl and cover it with plastic wrap. This salsa guacamole will remain fresh and flavorful for up to one week in the refrigerator. I do not recommend freezing.
