Kind of potato. Russet potatoes are the best and most commonly used potatoes in baking because they are a good size, high in starch, and bake with the fluffiest insides and crispy potato skins. If you are using larger potatoes, you might need to adjust the cooking time. Potato toppings. Add your desired toppings such as butter, sour cream, chives, green onion, shredded cheddar cheese, or cottage cheese. Microwave wattage. The cooking time may vary depending on the size and wattage of your microwave. If the potato isn’t fully cooked after recommended cooking time, microwave it in 1-2 minute increments until it is tender.

Scrub the potato clean and pierce it several times with a fork to allow steam to escape. Place the potatoes on a microwave-safe plate and microwave on high for 5-6 minutes. Turn the potatoes over and microwave on high for an additional 5-6 minutes, or until the potatoes are cooked through and tender when pierced with a fork. Remove them from the microwave and let them cool for a few minutes. Cut open the potatoes and fluff the flesh with a fork. Season with salt, pepper and add your desired toppings, such as butter, sour cream, chives, and shredded cheese.

To make the best microwave baked potato every time, make sure to follow these tips! Soak the potatoes in cold water before cooking to remove excess starch. Excess starch can prevent the potatoes from cooking evenly and can create a sticky texture on the skin. Don’t skip piercing the potato with a fork. This step is important to help steam escape and get your potatoes really soft and moist up to the center. It can also prevent a potato explosion in your microwave. For crispy skin, pop it in the oven. Preheat your oven to 425°F. After cooking your potatoes in the microwave, place them on a baking sheet and pop it in the oven for 10-15 minutes. Alternatively, you can also use an air fryer and while you’re at it, make some air fryer smashed potatoes too!. Don’t overcook. An overcooked baked potato will become dry and hard. If your potatoes have not reached your desired fluffiness after 5-6 minutes in the microwave, continue to cook them in 1-minute increments until they become soft and fluffy. Let it cool. Let the potatoes rest and cool in the microwave for at least one minute before adding your favorite toppings.
